This was an intelligencer or spy in the Delhi sultanate. The head of the intelligence department was designated barid-i mumlik. The role of barids had come to gain particular significance under autocratic sultans like Balban (1266-1286), 'Ala al-Din Khalji (1296-1316), and Muhammad bin Tughlaq (1325-1351). The father of 'Ali Barid, founder of the Baridi dynasty of Bidar, possibly earned this surname on account of having served as an intelligencer at some stage during his early career.
